Add 2000 steps a day and two servings of whole grain cereal and what do you get? Both overweight girls and their moms saw weight loss or decrease in body mass index with those simple changes in a study by obesity researcher James O. Hill, PhD.

Study Adds 2000 Steps a Day and Cereal

Working with 81 families with at least one overweight child, the 62 families in the experimental group made two simple changes: using a pedometer to measure 2,000 extra steps each day and adding two servings of cereal. After 14-weeks, the overweight girls in the experimental group gained 30 percent less weight and reduced their body mass index and percentage of body fat as compared to the control group. Additionally, moms in the experimental group lost more than a pound while the control moms gained more than a pound.

War on Obesity Starts With Breakfast and a Pedometer

"The fact is Americans are gaining one to three pounds every year," said Dr. Hill, who is also the director of the Center for Human Nutrition at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. "By making simple changes such as taking a walk together after dinner, riding bikes on the weekend and sitting down to a bowl of cereal in the morning, families can stem this growing health crisis."

America On The Move

Dr. Hill is the driving force behind America on the Move, a national campaign to inspire Americans to make healthy lifestyle choices including better diet and exercise. He is presenting the results of a 14-week family intervention study at the 2004 Kellogg Nutrition Symposium being held in conjunction with the International Congress of Dietetics Conference in Chicago.
