I volunteered at two previous
Livestrong Challenge Walk/Run and Rides in Portland, Oregon, but due to where I was positioned, I never saw
Lance Armstrong. I finally saw the man himself, Lance Armstrong, leading off the 100-Mile Ride in 2008. He is the far left biker in the yellow and black jersey in the above photo. The 2008 Portland Livestrong Challenge was held at the Nike World Campus near Beaverton, Oregon. Approximately 3,000 participants raised over one million dollars for the Lance Armstrong Foundation to use in the fight against cancer.
The Livestrong Challenge offers bike rides of 10, 40, 70 or 100 miles, and a 5K Walk/Run. It is a non-competitive event open to people of all abilities, with special recognition for cancer survivors.
Lance Armstrong is a testicular cancer survivor. He credits treatment directed by researchers from Oregon Health Sciences University for his survival and recovery. After treatment, he went on to win the Tour de France annual bicycle race seven times, perhaps the greatest achievement of an endurance athlete.
