When cold and rain come your way, do you and your walking buddy find excuses to stay on the couch? If you have access to a treadmill or two and a little forethought, you and your buddy will soon be back on track with a few tips.

Walking partners Krista and Cira have come up with a few tips on how to keep you and your buddy's fitness goals alive during the inclement weather by simultaneously using treadmills.

Find a Couple Of Treadmills

This sounds harder than it is. Finding two treadmills side by side will keep you motivated and feeling connected and committed. Where to look:
  • Apartment/condo complex
  • Work facility
  • Local gym
  • Local school

A Buddy Enhances Treadmill Workout Dedication

Your partner counts on you and you on them. When you know that someone else's goals rest on your shoulders and yours on theirs, there must be a certain level of commitment to the mutual process. Discuss and nurture this.

Set Your Dates: Maybe you start out just going walking on treadmills once a week, but if that is what you and your buddy agree upon, then pen this into your calendar.

Set Your Times: If you doubt your partner is going to roll out of bed when the alarm goes off before sun-up or will get tied up with work, then find a time that works. Krista and Cira always meet at 6:30 a.m. (not 6:35 a.m.!). Consistency helps reinforce dedication.

Overcoming Off Days

Meeting at the same time every session does not necessarily mean that you'll be meeting your partner in the same frame of mind. Sometimes one or the other of you will be still half-asleep, cranky, getting a cold or just not in the mood to be there when you greet and start walking. Accept it and don't feel the need to take on the other person's "stuff." Besides, after about 20 minutes, the endorphins kick in and you will have our rose colored glasses on again.

Celebrate Your Victories

Give 'high 5's" across the treadmills in celebration of the little things. Maybe it's a pair of pants that fit better or it's an extra 1,000 steps logged in the day before.

Krista and Cira also share their daily affirmations: This is an opportunity for each to focus on some aspect of their bodies or their training that feels good.

Focusing on the positive and having a pre-planned way to build positive reflection into a work out means that you'll not only leave having had a great workout, but will feel uplifted and positive about the next time you meet. It is a great way to divert the focus from how hard you're working and keep it on the rewards of your plan.

A Buddy Prevents Treadmill Boredom

Using a treadmill with a buddy provides the changing scenery that you and your partner may need to keep from getting too bored while trying to ward away the winter doldrums. Keeping fit in the winter indoors will ensure that you still have your spring in spring. Stay dedicated to your buddy through the tough times will make those sunny spring jaunts all the more rewarding.
