Vancouver, Washington has the 14-foot wide pedestrian/bicycle Waterfront Renaissance Trail along the Columbia River bordering Columbia Way. But the Renaissance Trail had no connection to the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site, Vancouver Barracks and Officer's Row and adjoining neighborhoods as there was no pedestrian crossing over Highway 14 for a mile. A pedestrian bridge was needed, but what was built far exceeds being a mere concrete and steel safety structure. Instead, the Confluence Project contracted artist Maya Lin and landscape architect Johnpaul Jones to create a pedestrian and bicycle walkway that celebrates the land, the river, and the people.
