About America WALKs:
America WALKs is a national non-profit organization dedicated to make America a great place for walking. It includes walking advocacy groups dedicated to promoting walkable communities, nonprofits with related goals and corporate supporters.
Their vision is, "By 2020, walking in everyday life is embraced across America. Streets and neighborhoods are safe and attractive public places that encourage people of all ages, abilities, ethnicities, and incomes to walk for exercise, recreation, and transportation. Walkable community policies promote health, economic vitality, environmental sustainability, and social equity."
National and Local Walkability Efforts:
At the national level, America Walks works to increase funding for pedestrian transportation and advocates for public policies that support walking. They work with partners such as the Complete Streets Coalition, Rails to Trails Conservancy, Alliance for Bicycling and Walking, Association of Pedestrian & Bicycle Professionals (APBP) and the Safe Routes to School National Partnership.
To help local pedestrian advocacy groups, the America WALKs website has advice about getting started and how to work with public officials, engineers and designers.
Who is involved in America WALKs?:
America WALKs was founded in 1996 on the principle that local grassroots advocacy is the most effective way to transform our country's transportation system. Supporting memberships for individuals are free, with two paid levels for individuals. Organizations can join with a fee based on their budget. Corporate members can join at various sponsorship levels.
