Nordic Walking Step by Step is the first comprehensive book on how to start Nordic Walking, written in English. David Downer has written a very readable book with clear instructions and illustrations on how and why to take up Nordic Walking. The book currently is available as an ebook for download and viewing on your computer or printing out as an Adobe Acrobat .pdf file.
What is Nordic Walking?
David Downer gives a history of walking with fitness poles and the benefits of walking with fitness poles. He describes how they can be used by health walkers for regular exercise, and by those who want to achieve a higher fitness and sports level.
Step by Step
This book has the best instructions I have seen for how to do Nordic Walking. Photos and good instructions cover stretches and warm-ups, and then exactly how a beginner should learn to use the poles. David Downer adds his personal, practical experience as a Nordic Walker and coach.
In addition to the excellent tutorial, Downer also covers the common mistakes and how to correct them, and frequently asked questions. I admit that most of my questions were covered very well by Downer.
Walking Pole Advice
I appreciated the advice on selecting walking poles - adjustable, one-piece, carbon fiber, etc. Downer's advice appears solid and not geared to any one manufacturer. That is welcome and refreshing as most Nordic Walking tutorials are produced by those selling their brand.
Downer also describes the other Nordic sports - Nordic Blading, Nordic Snowshoeing, and Cross-Country Skiing.
Fitness Walking Program
Downer's advice on a Nordic Walking program is sound. The book includes a 12 week training log and advice on safety, clothing, footwear, and water. I thought his advice was good for beginner walkers through those who walk regularly and want to pump up their workout.
I am very satisfied with this book. After reading it, I feel more confident in Nordic Walking.
