Bataan Memorial Death March
This site is for those in the Southwest United States who wish a challenge and the opportunity to add a medal to their shadow box. It is my understanding those connected with the National Guard of New Mexico may wear the ribbon. For other components of the national Guard check with your Personnel unit before wearing it. Links will take you to the registration
pages and the routemap.
International Marching League
Within this page is a series of marches organized by the International Marching League. From my research, military members attending the marches in The Netherlands, Denmark, and Luxembourg are permitted to wear the medals awarded at these marches as long as they adhere to the rules associated with military categories. In the case of the The Netherlands persons below the age of 50 must carry 10 kilos (22 pounds) in a ruck sack for the duration of the march (four days). As for Luxembourg and Denmark the march must be accomplished in military uniform. In order for American personnel to wear the medals or ribbons, they must document their attendance and submit the appropriate paperwork through channels, which varies depending on branch of service. Other national militaries may allow their personnel to wear medals earned at these marches. If this is the case, the general rule of thumb is that if that countries military allows wear of the medal, then any other military earning same under the same circumstances may also wear the medal. The final authority is the Awards and Decorations official for the given branch of service. My advice is do the paperwork and be correct in the wear of the award.
Melbourne ANZAC Day Commemoration March
For those serving in Australia and New Zealand the opportunity to participate in this event would foster good relations and leave one with good memories. Contact local authorities for information on attending.
GORP Walking In Europe
For those stationed in Europe this is an excellent source of information for long distance marching. Try this for a week or two and the IML marches will be a piece of cake afterwards. Be sure to bring your passport and suitable identification as crossing borders requires being in a legal status. Please be aware of current local conditions when doing these marches and give a colleague at your unit a copy of an itinerary.
