I used to walk with my hiking gear, but nowadays I have two different sets of gear for the two different activities.

Boots

When hiking on natural trails you are more likely to encounter rocks and roots. The sturdy soles of boots protect the feet from rocks, and their construction helps keep you from spraining your ankle when tripping over roots and other obstacles. They also are more forgiving of getting dusty, dirty, and muddy than your nice white athletic shoes. In recent years I prefer lightweight hiking boots or trail shoes, available from most athletic shoe manufacturers. Because I hike in the wet Northwest USA, I always choose the waterproof variety. Expect prices from $80-$250 US.

Pack

When you go out into the woods, you need to take along the 10 Essentials and you need something to carry them in. A backpack with wide padded straps and a waistbelt is the way to carry these. The waistbelt places the weight of the pack on your hips rather than on your shoulders. What to carry? The Mountaineers came up with the following 10 Essentials list in the 1930's: map, compass, water and a way to purify it, extra food, rain gear and extra clothing, firestarter and matches, first aid kit, Swiss Army knife or multi-purpose tool, flashlight, sunglasses and sunscreen. You then are ready in case you encounter sudden storms or get lost.

Hiking Clothing

I wear layers when going into the woods. The inner layer is of a wicking fabric so that sweat doesn't stay next to my body. The middle layer is insulation - a polar fleece or a high-tech knit. The outer layer is a waterproof and windproof but breathable jacket. As I warm up I take off a layer, as I cool down I put them back on from the backpack. I wear sturdy hiking pants to fend off branches that would rip my walking pants. Companies such as Royal Robbins and Patagonia make excellent hiking pants. For socks I have several pairs of Thorlo padded hiking socks which have lasted for 15 years now despite constant use and washing. In tick country, long sleeves and long pants are essential.

Wild Things

Mosquitoes love me. I never go into the woods without wearing bug repellant. Some folks worry about bears and snakes, but they have never given me a second glance, whereas mosquitoes call all their friends from miles around to come feast on me. As for bears and snakes - read the cautions posted for your chosen trail and follow their advice.

Where to Get Hiking Stuff

There are many excellent outdoor shops, including those who sell online. REI, Eastern Mountain Sports, Cabelas, and Sierra Trading Post are shops that I have used.

Ready to go for a hike? It does differ from city/road walking.
