UK End to End Walk Phase 3
Sept. 4-18, 2001 by Alan Cook
I accomplished Phase 3 of my UK End-to-End walk (also known as John O'Groats to Land's End-JOGLE, or Land's End to John O'Groats-LEJOG) between September 4 and September 18, 2001. Since the walk occurred against a background of calamitous world events, I will comment on how they affected my wife, Bonny, and me.

Since Bonny is my support team, and since my time for walking is limited, the following ground rules are in effect:

1. (Bonny's rule) She must be able to find me at all times. In other words, I have to stay on roads. This year I carried a cellular phone (called a mobile phone in the UK) for the first time.
2. I can walk in either direction.
3. I can walk the various segments of the End-to-End in any sequence. For write-ups of the first two phases of my walk, see the following sites:
Phase 1 | Phase 2

Summary of the walk so far

Phase I (1999) 274 miles in northern Scotland in 11 days
Phase II (2000) 215 miles in southwest England in 8.5 days.
Phase III (2001) 282 miles in western and northwest England, ending in Scotland, in 11 days.
• Total miles walked so far: 771.
Total days walked so far: 30.5
Total miles estimated to complete the End-to End: 100
Average distance walked per day: 25 miles.

A note on shoes-I wore one pair of Reebok shoes for the whole distance this year. I wore the same pair for almost the entire walk last year (and rested them in between). Even though I own 5 or 6 pairs of the same model Reebok shoes, this pair is the most comfortable. After almost 500 official walking miles in them, and an indeterminate number of unofficial miles, I have retired them.

I wore two-ply socks (available at running stores) and powdered my feet with baby powder or cornstarch each morning.
