Fun and Freestyling

The following sites are real. They cheered up my day, too.

Hikers Against Doo-Doo

As a hiker and a microbiology technologist, I appreciate this organization beyond its fun yearly contest for a slogan. Their aim is to serve as a "clearinghouse" and to promote education of the hazards and problems created by careless or thoughtless folk who soil the world's walking, running, hiking, and nature trails. (Be warned, my years in parasitology and urinalysis have given me many hours to contemplate such slogans. My submissions being obviously so great, don't bother to enter yourself - but be sure to read the past entries!)

Sports RunabOut

Walking getting dull? How about making a game of it by rolling a ring along with you? Sounds perfect if you have some kids who need more entertainment along the way.

Freestyle Walking

Like skateboarding without a skateboard, this has a following among the younger crowd who saw it on MTV. Busta move! And to think all those years when I would suddenly skip, twirl, walk on a curb, etc. I was freestyle walking!

Freestyle walkers have their own specialty shoe - the Soap Shoe company makes a shoe with plastic grinder plates (which they say will not damage surfaces), so you can leap up on a railing or curb and slide down it trapping it between the grinder plates of your shoes. Needless to say, this activity is frowned upon by those who must maintain public buildings and who worry about the condition of their curbs and liability.
