National Trails Day
Events
National Trails Day is
coordinated by the American Hiking Society and has grown to include 1000
different events with a million trail enthusiasts. National Trails Day
events include hikes, bikes, rides, trail work parties, trail dedications, and
outdoor fairs. The trails celebrated are not just the big national trails
such as the Pacific Crest Trail, but any public trail through local and state
parks, and around towns and cities.
Hiking for Health
Hiking improves health in
many ways. Having an available walking trail encourages people to walk the
30-60 minutes per day recommended by health experts. Walking 30-60 minutes
a day can reduce risks of heart disease, stroke, Type II diabetes, breast and
colon cancer by 20-50% The health of America can be improved by making
walking and hiking trails available to more people.
"National Trails Day is
really about people," says American Hiking Society President Mary Margaret
Sloan. "It's a single day each year when the partners who make America's
trails happen and the people who use, support, and enjoy them come together to
celebrate the value of trails."
