Walking with the Walrus

CEDARVILLE STATE FOREST MARYLAND USA
SUNDAY, APRIL 26, 1998

by Kevin Shaw

*I met my longtime volksmarching friend Marty Brumback at the Cedarville State Forest March for Parks walk early this sunny, mild Sunday afternoon. Joining with us were all three pooches, India, Peaches and Cosmo. We had not walked for quite a while, and we got there just before the start closed up. The Washington DC Area Volksmarch Club usually has been hosting a walk here each spring for the March for Parks. Trailmaster Steve Arnett, Club volunteers Fred Lopez and Nancy Stenger all greeted us at the start or end of the walk, and put together a marked 6 km and 10 km trail. Marty and I got tied up with talking so much, and with the closing out of the walk imminent, we did not pay attention too much to the directions, and Marty did not realize at the beginning that there were two different distance trails. So we wound up actually doing a modified version of the 6 km trail.
*It was still a grand walk in the woods, and Cosmo, my newest volksmarching canine, got to meet more volksmarchers on and off the trail, and for the first time what she thought were the biggest doggies ever seen- i.e. horses on the trail, with people riding them! She was scared! Peaches and India were unfazed. The time went by so fast, and we had to continue our conversations with an impromptu picnic at a park bench near the parking lot.
*There were about 200 walkers for the two day event on a very busy volksmarching weekend in this area, with lots of tough choices to make as to what walks to do. I always enjoy seeing this area of the state each spring, and swear that I will return to do the year round event here, especially since this area is the closest for my friend Marty to get to from his isolated spot 20 miles southwest of this spot in Indian Head MD, and also since the pooches are allowed to romp in this park. There was for the first time, just established on April 1 of this year, a $2.00 park entrance fee that surprised us a bit upon entering the park. Thank you Washington DC Area volksmarching club for hosting this great event in the woods.
