This will be my first marathon also. I am currently training using the program outlined in Walking magazine.
Aug 11, Did 8 miles on a paved walking trail near my home. Getting a bit worried about my speed, can't seem to get above 3.75 mph. My shoes are too heavy (Reebok Trailwalkers DMX) and designed for different terrain than Im actually training on. Getting the Adidas Solo today (recommended on several racewalking websites)and will do 10 miles on 8/13 and 13 miles on 8/14. We'll see if my times improve.

Margaret Raye
Looking forward to meeting other walkers. This is my third marathon and I am hoping to average between a 10-11 minute mile. I am planning to do two more this year but hope to get my best time in Portland.

Gladys Rasmussen
This sounds great. I have been anxious to enter into a marathon but I can never seem to find any in the Redding area where I live. Looking forward to hearing from you. Gladys
Gladys - my mail to you keeps bouncing, please email me at walking.guide@about.com

Love your page! Ran the Seattle Marathon in 1978 before tearing up my knee in 1982. Plan to walk Portland Marathon. Look forward to meeting you and all the other walkers.

Gail Norris
I'm a member of the IRA Racewalking Team; we just completed Portland to Coast as women's masters champs and record holders for 4th yr in a row! (24hr41min).  This is my 4th PDX Marathon & 7th marathon & looking forward to it! I'd love to meet some other About.com-ers. I think there will be only 2 of us from IRA this year at the marathon so it'd be nice to have a big group of walkers.

Janice Gadsby
The Portland Marathon will be my second marathon...keep your fingers crossed for good weather and a good time.

Jim Lipscomb
Jim has been on my Portland to Coast team the past two years. He's in the photo above on the far left.

Lois Jordahl
This will be my second marathon. I've trained both years with Women Walk the Marathon, a group I'd highly recommend. Last year I had a choir concert the night of the marathon and I was able to stand and sing for nearly two hours that night. I attribute that to good training!

Nicole Dean
1st marathon. Been training since March. Walked 23 miles yesterday 9/11 and am hoping I'll be prepared.
Nicole - email me, since I don't have your email address. walking.guide@about.com

Connie Olson
Update-there will be three IRA'S wandering around Portland. Can't wait to see all the walkers, this is a first for me!!!!!! See you all at the finish!!!

Karen Jensen
Also a first-marathoner

Billy Cook
I've done this several times, but am bringing a new walker with me, Julie Lundh. Hope to see you there.

John Cunningham

I can't do the marathon this year, but I'm going to do one next year. I'm interested in training information and tips, along with hearing about everyone's experiences. Please keep me posted!
I'm doing a 10K at the end of September. Currently, I'm training six days a week - longest walk so far: 60 min. at 14-15 min./mile. My training consists of 1 long (30 min.) speed day, 1 interval speed day, 2 long slow days and 2 moderate easy days. I hope to do the 10 K under 90 mins. This is my first race, so I want to experience being a walker amongst the runners (this makes me nervous!) I'd love to hear how the rest of you handle that.
