A racewalking shoe must be extremely flexible as racewalkers roll through each step. A racewalker strikes with the heel, but it is a more gentle impact than that of a runner. A low, tapered and not overly cushioned heel is wanted. The shoe should be flat from heel to forefoot. The shoe should be lightweight for speed. It needs just enough cushion for long distance.

1. New Balance 111

The 111 is the only commercially available shoe designed for specifically for racewalkers, after consultation with racewalkers. The result is a light, flexible shoe with just enough cushioning that racewalkers actually use and rate highly.

2. New Balance RC330

A racing flat recommended by a reader, with the low heel and extreme flexibility needed for racewalking. It is cushioned and New Balance claims it is good enough for marathon distances.

3. Hershey Custom Racewalker

What could be better than custom shoes made to fit your foot by a craftsman? Hersey Custom Shoes designed a racewalking trainer and a racewalk competition shoe used in the 2000 Olympics. I have a pair and there is nothing better. The drawback? The initial cost and lead time.
