It's World Sauntering Day!

Thursday June 19, 2008
Slow down, you move too fast, you gotta make the morning last.... Don't let them talk you into running or jogging or racewalking. It's our day to saunter -- to walk about in a leisurely manner. Each June 19th is World Sauntering Day, invented in the 1970's by W.T. Rabe, at the prime sauntering spot of the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Michigan. Sauntering has surprising health benefits -- slow walking actually burns more calories per mile than walking at regular speeds. But it takes you a lot longer to burn those calories!

Take a nice saunter. It will help relieve stress. A saunter can be a great mindful walk - pay attention to the little things around you. Flowers, birds, really atrocious lawn ornaments. When you saunter, you have permission to stop, look, and listen. Read the historical markers you've always zipped past. Window shop. Rate the neighbors' lawn care and shrubberies. Saunter, and enjoy.
