Pick up trash while walking

I walk every day, so once a week i take a few trash bags with me and pick up garbage throughout my walk. I usually end up with over 3 bags full of trash and recyclables.

composter

Since watching Oprah yesterday, I have committed to composting. I usually don't have alot to throw away, however, from now on I will compost it all. Additionally, plastic bags are out. I had no idea just how hazardous a small plastic bracelet can be to the creatures in the sea and on the ground. I remember seeing the results of plastics on a deer in the Grand Canyon. It suffocated from swollowing a plastic trash bag. Hopefully, substitutes for our familiar plastic items will become more available in our stores which will encourage us to think about and hopefully use less plastic.

Encourage re-use at walking events

I host walking events, and we encourage walkers to bring their own refillable water bottles. When I attend a big run/walk and the runners and walkers are using paper cups and tossing them and energy bar/gel wrappings on the ground, it really bothers me. The rest of our lives we use the trash can, but running down a street you just litter! We also stopped giving out goodie bags because we noted that almost everything went in to the trash that wasn't edible. Now we just put upcoming event brochures, giveaways, etc. out on a table for those who want them, and divvie out the snacks along the course and at the finish.
