Top AVA Walks 2008

St. Louis, Missouri-Downtown-Y0030. I love this walk because it goes through Laclede's landing, Jefferson Expansion Memorial, and Union Station. This year they added a loop onto the bridge over the Mississippi River. Boston, Massachusetts, Y0757-Northeaster University. I saw a part of Boston that I had not seen before. I walked around Fenway during the World Series. St. Charles, Missouri, Y0399, Historic Downtown, has a little of everything. I enjoy the historic downtown area and the walk along the river.

Top 3 YRE 2008

New York YRE 0315 - took all day to do this walk and see all the sights along the way. Fabulous. Philadelphia, PA YRE0482 - another great walk for sightseeing Philadelphia. Harpers Ferry, W VA YRE 1019 - a complete surprise. Did the walk so I could say I had walked in W VA but I was unprepared for how scenic and historical it was. Thoroughly enjoyed this walk.

My top 3

1) Washington, DC 77971 2008/Y0231 - The Mall walk. Not only are the sites spectacular, but the instructions include good guide book info, so a tourist gets a good tour of the Mall area of DC. 2) Volcano National Park, the Big Island, HI - 79734 2008/Y1072. There is nowhere else in the US with a walk like this, across the bottom of a live volcano. 3) Silverton, OR, Silverton State Park - Y171 - natural surface trail to 10 waterfalls, and actually walking behind 3 of them.

Silver Falls SP YR 0171 Silverton, OR

I liked this walk because most of it is on natural trails and passes 9 beautiful waterfalls with an optional 10th one.

My #1 YRE

Montgomery, Alabama #Y1267 This walk has friendly people, a great capital, and lots of history, everything from Civil War to Civil Rights and more.

Best YRE Events 2008

Mackinac Island, MI Great event from the ferry ride over to the shoreline trail ringing the auto free island. Very scenic. C O Canal MD, Great Falls segment. Although I rode the bike event it is also available as a walk. Enjoyed the ruggedness of the Potomac flowing through the great falls while riding on a level towpath along the canal. Duluth, MN Another bike on Munger Trail. First half was all uphill on the rail-trail. The downhill return took 50% less time. Stayed at the Munger Inn (start point). Only lodging all year with colored sheets and towels and moose carvings in the headboard! Character.

MANY great walks in the great Volkswalking city. But this is the one to taken if you can ONLY take one. Go by key places downtown.

Two Other Walks

Point Lobos, CA and West Point, NY. Point Lobos shows you the best of the Monterey Penninsula and the West Point walk is not only beautiful, it's a great walk through a historic military college. Be sure and stop to see the Army mules!
