Why I Wanted to Lose Weight

To get healthier....my doctor challenged me a couple of years ago to lose 50 lbs and I lost some then gained most of it back. I will be 65 next month and decided it was now or never to change my eating habits,

My Exercise and Diet Journey

I started counting calories in March 2009. I weighed in at 236# and found Livestrong.com website with a great calorie counter. Other benefits are logging in exercise and keeping up with water. You can export your data to Excel spreadsheet and then I could share that with my Dr. In April, I started walking 3 miles a day, moved up to four in a couple of months and in September moved up to 5 miles a day. I have also started biking some, just to exercise different muscles. I also joined a gym to use the machines and get some guidance, but it is 30 miles away and right now am not going often, so the walking is the key for me.

Lessons learned

  • For myself, I need to walk everyday. It is too easy to do the rest day and then something happens the next day and that's two days of not walking..etc. I have been adapting The Gabriel Method into my program which has helped me a lot. I am doing visualization and eating more healthy, taking supplements. Just general good health sense. I have learned that fat free, artificial sweeteners and reduced fat things are not necessarily healthy, so I go ahead and have the natural things and count the calories. Gabriel method says calories don't count, but that is so ingrained in my mind, that I continue to count calories.

Congratulations! Tracking your calories and exercise is a good way to stay on course.
