How Long Did it Take?

I have lost 21kg in 5 months.

Why I Wanted to Lose Weight

In late 2007 at 124kg I was diagnosed with diabetes, I soon lost 12kg controlling my sugars with diet and exercise. I fell into denial, I didn't want to know about the diabetes & went about my normal life eating what ever I wanted, ignoring sugar levels. In April 2009 I nearly fainted and fell down the stairs at work, my sugar levels had reached highs of over 16.9 during the day. I had to stop doing this to my body, I was absolutely exhausted, I had high blood pressure and my weight had escallated to 116kg. My doctor put me onto medication to control the sugars, this is when I felt I really had to change something.

My Exercise and Diet Journey

I started out walking 2 to 3km three days a week, averaging about 10mins per km. Now 4 months on i am walking up to 10km 3 days a week, I have also started running with my walks and am building my running distance up each time i go out. I am now averaging 8mins per km. I am doing my first ever 10km fun run in November this year.

My eating habits have changed completely, I don't consider myself to be on a diet, I have changed my lifestyle. I no longer binge or feel the need to eat for comfort. I have cut out sugar and am now eating lots of fresh fruit and veggies. I no longer drink soft drink or alcohol, only water and tea. But i dont deny myself everything, I am just being sensible with what I put into my mouth.

Lessons learned

  • I have learned that if you have the motivation, determination and will power you can do anything. I havn't finished yet, I still have another 20kg I want to loose and I don't care how long it takes me I know that I will do it. Having the support of friends and family really help and I especially love the comments that I am receiving from people who I haven't seen in ages.
