Why I Wanted to Lose Weight

I was diagnosed with pre diabetes, and was 205 lbs on a 5"6" frame

My Exercise and Diet Journey

I have always liked to walk and have subscribed to your journal for some time. An article that you wrote about Nordic Walking caught my interest. Prior to reading this article I had experimented with carrying weights to increase the benefits of a walk. The dynamics of holding weights caused a tear in my Achilles and I was just working my way back when I read about Nordic Walking.

Again, based on your article I researched and purchased some Leki poles. Wow, was I impressed with the ease of walking after incorporating the poles! There was much less pressure on my knees, tendons and joints. But the cool thing was that I toned my upper body while walking.

It didn't take long with walking 2 miles 4 days a week and 4 miles 2 days a week for my body to start burning calories. I also incorporated a modified South Beach Diet.

Within 3 months I had lost 25 pounds and my doctor told me that I was no longer showing pre diabetes in my blood work.

I am 57 years old and haven't felt this good in years.

Lessons learned

  • Don't worry about what people say while walking with your poles, just tell them that you are out looking for the snow.
