How I Started Walking With My Dog

Zorak has joined us on forest trail family walks since he was a puppy. When I started a learn to run program this spring, no one seemed to be interested in joining me, but Zorak has become my dedicated running buddy. As soon as he sees me pull out my running gear he gets very excited. I walk a few blocks to make sure he's had his bathroom breaks, find a spot to stash the biodegradable doggie bags to retrieve on my way back, and then we're off. I try to stick to shady paved forest trails for both of us and bring water of course. He's 8 now and the vet says he's in excellent shape for an "old' dog!

The Best Thing About Walking with My Dog

On walks and runs, he's so absolutely happy just to be with me, to the point where I feel I have to get out for runs or walks for his health and happiness as well. While it's easy for me to talk myself out of a walk or run, when I think about my dog's health and happiness, I feel it's important to get out to keep him strong and healthy.

Lessons Learned

  • Walking with your dog deepens the bond between you and brings a lot of joy to both of you. Your dog's enthusiasm for walking and sharing time with you is such an excellent motivator to keep up a regular walking routine. Start gradually both on natural and paved surfaces so your dog's pads can build up and not get irritated or torn. Bring lots of doggie doo bags along, and if off leash if appropriate, some treats to reinforce good behaviour.
