How I Started Walking With My Dog

I am an avid walker, but find myself less than eager to walk during Wisconsin's long winter months. So after much research I adopted my walking partner from a no kill shelter specifically to give him a forever home and as a walking companion for me. He is a great motivator. He is always ready to go with his tail wagging.

We worked slowly and he is now built up to 5 miles most days. We aim for about 25 to 35 miles per week. Zak has been with me for the past 5 months and this is the most active I have been in winter since I was a teenager. Zack is almost 2 years old and I am 56.

The Best Thing About Walking with My Dog

He always looks back to check if I am still there.

He is infinitely patient and trot along with what looks like a smile on his face.

Zak will say hello in his own way to everyone he meets. Most people loves him right back.

Lessons Learned

  • A dog loves you no matter how sweaty you are.
  • Having a dog motivates you to drag yourself out of bed because the dog is telling you it's time to get up and take him out and you made a promise to do that.
  • I feel energize all day after a brisk walk in the morning.
  • I sleep better at night after an early evening walk.
