How I Started Walking With My Dog

Alfie is my second lurcher, so I was already accustomed to walking with a dog.

The Best Thing About Walking with My Dog

Having an excuse to go walking every day, and having a great friend there with me who likes exploring as much as I do. I love walking him in the hills, but also enjoy taking him on days out; most touristy places are welcoming to dogs, and he often gets given a bowl of water and snack when we stop to eat.

Lessons Learned

  • Don't take a dog for a run, it isn't fair. They need to stop constantly to sniff messages left by other dogs and go to the toilet. Also, keep your dog on a lead (get an extendable one if you like them to roam). It may seem like you're doing them a favour, letting them loose, but they nearly always approach other dogs without listening to you. Who knows what the other dog will be like. It may be aggressive or may just be on a lead as it is excitable around dogs (in which case, it might pull the owner over). Also clean up, it's not fair to expect someone else to.
