Lance Armstrong himself led out the 100-Mile Ride of the 2008 Portland
Livestrong Challenge. Bikers start from the Nike World Campus near Beaverton, Oregon. Bike distances offered include 100, 70, 40 and 10 miles. A 100-mile ride is also called a century ride. It is a challenge similar to a marathon for a walker or runner. Our Bicycling Guide tells how to
train for a century ride.
The 2008 event weather was completely different from 2007, when it was cold with torrential rain. The 100-mile course had to be shortened in 2007 due to slick conditions. For 2008, riders, walkers and runners faced temperatures ranging from a morning 70 degrees to an afternoon 90 degrees. Heat stress, rather than cold, was a concern.
