Treadmills in this price range vary from very basic non-motorized treadmills to models for runners. In the last few years several manufacturers have made some impressive strides in the $1,000-$1,500 range. They are backing them up with extensive warranties. The treadmill recommendations below are based on a number of factors, including third party reviews, customer testimonials, company reputation and warranties. Treadmill expert Fred Waters provides insight into the best budget treadmills.

1. Sole F80 Treadmill

Sole treadmills have received a "Best Buy" rating two years in a row from Treadmill Doctor. Their residential models are used by the Hilton chain for in-room exercising, which says something about the durability of the machines. The Sole F80 features include 2.5 hp continuous duty motor, 55" length deck, wireless heart rate control, and 2.75" rollers, five window display and sturdy 250 lb weight. The speed and incline controls are conveniently located on the handlebars. You can make adjustments without breaking your stride. The 2-year service warranty can't be found on any other treadmills for under $3,000.

Smooth Fitness has always had a strong contender at about $1,000. The Smooth 5.65 is an update to their best selling 5.45. The 2.5 HP continuous duty motor has a lifetime guarantee. There is a generous selection of workouts, including heart rate controlled workouts and nine workout profiles - enough for a big family! Smooth has a 3-year parts warranty.

3. NordicTrack C900 Treadmill

A leading consumer magazine gave the C900 its top rating for folding treadmills for 2012. It has a powerful 3.0 hp motor and many advanced features. It has 32 built-in workouts, including a track workout. It is iFit Live compatible, enabling you to download new daily workouts, such as those by Jillian Michaels. Or use iFit Live's Google Maps feature to virtually walk or run anyplace on the planet -- the treadmill adjusts incline to the map! It has a port for your iPod or other music player and a workout fan. Monitor your heart rate with either the pulse monitor or the included wireless chest strap. The weight limit is 350 pounds and it has a 60-inch long deck for longer strides. It has a lifetime warranty on the motor and frame, 3 years on parts, 1 year labor.

4. ProForm Performance 600 Treadmill

This folding treadmill was ranked a Best Buy by Consumer Reports in January, 2012 as a low-budget ($800) folding treadmill. It has a 2.5 hp motor and a 325 pound user weight limit. The deck is 55 inches long. It is compatible with iFit Live and Nike + iPod with iFit Live, so you can vary your workouts and log your workouts. It has an iPod port and a built-in sound system, plus a cooling fan. If you don't choose to use iFit, it comes with 16 built-in workouts. It has a grip pulse monitor. The warranty is lifetime on the frame and motor, 2 years for parts, and one year for labor.

5. NordicTrack Commercial 1500

This is a treadmill with commercial-grade cushioning and a long deck for a home treadmill price. It is a folding treadmill with assisted lift. It has a powerful 3.25 HP motor, a weight limit up to 350 pounds. It has 24 built-in workouts. You can expand those with the optional iFit Live internet-connected unit which downloads customized workouts and allows you to track your workouts online.  It has grip heart rate monitors to monitor your workout intensity. It has a built-in iPod dock with two speakers. Treadmill Doctor gave it a Best Buy rating.

6. Horizon Fitness Livestrong 10.0T Treadmill

This treadmill was rated a Best Buy by TreadmillDoctor.com for the 2010-11 reviews. It has a 2.75 hp motor and a user weight limit of 325 pounds. Besides the ten pre-programmed workouts, it comes equipped with Livestrong Interactive. You use the included USB stick to track your treadmill workout on the Livestrong.com web site. You can also download free workouts by Lance Armstrong's coach, Peter Park. It has an iPod port and built-in speakers, cooling fan, and grip pulse monitors. The warranty is lifetime on the motor and frame, three years on parts, one year labor.

7. Sole F63 Treadmill

The Sole F63 treadmill is the entry-level model, going for around $1,100. It has many of the same features as the F80. The main differences are the construction of the deck, a less expensive console and display, smaller rollers, and shorter warranty coverage. The overall construction and components make this a strong contender in its price range.

8. Lifespan TR2000 HRC Treadmill

If you don't have much space, this is one of the most compact (and folding) treadmills on the market. It also features decline as well as incline, so you can walk downhill as well as uphill - something I recommend to keep all of your muscles in gear. It gets good quality ratings from several reviewers.

9. Vision Fitness 9200 Treadmill

TreadmillDoctor.com and a leading consumer magazine gave this model their 1st Runner-up for its price category. It has no pre-programmed workouts but does display elevation, time, distance, calories. Has a 2 HP continuous duty motor.

10. NordicTrack A2750 Pro

At under $1000, you get a powerful 2.75 cph commercial motor and a long 60-inch belt. The NordicTrack also is iFit ready. You can buy the iFit Live wireless module for an additional $129 and use it to download personalized workouts and keep your online exercise profile updated. The treadmill itself comes with 22 workout programs. These include workouts designed for training for various distances: 1 mile, 5k, 5 mile, 10k, 10 mile or half marathon training. It has hand grip heart rate sensors to monitor your exertion level and tell you whether you are in your desired exercise zone. The treadmill can handle users up to 350 pounds. It is a folding treadmill. This treadmill has received good reviews from Runners World and a leading consumer magazine as a good entry-level treadmill. This model has been discontinued but you may still find them out there, new or used.
