A railroad underpass connects the Renaissance Trail on the Columbia River in Vancouver, Washington to Old Apple Tree Park. Until the opening of the Vancouver Land Bridge in 2008, this was a dead end. Now, this plain underpass leads to an elegant and inspirational land bridge over Highway 14 to the Fort Vancouver National Historic Park and adjoining neighborhoods.
As I heard of plans for a pedestrian overpass in this area, I was excited to have a linkage between these two beautiful areas of the city. But I was expecting something plain and utilitarian.
