Walkers learn about the history of the region through a series of artworks showing the people and the uses of the land. Fort Vancouver was the site the Hudson's Bay Company headquarters and supply depot from 1825 through 1849. It served as a center of the fur trade. As the Oregon Trail opened, Vancouver Barracks was established as the first military post in the Pacific Northwest. Many figures who served in the Civil War were stationed at Fort Vancouver before or after the war, including Ulysses S. Grant and Philip Henry Sheridan.
