Fort Vancouver served as a trading post and administrative center for Hudson's Bay Company in the 1800's. This was a center of the fur trade on the west coast of North America. It later became part of the U.S. miltary post.

The surface of the path is crushed granite, providing a hard surface for foot and bicycle traffic.
