The Council Circle has low benches surrounding a representation of a fire pit. Names of the local Native American tribes are inscribed on the benches. Part of the history of Fort Vancouver is the subjugation of the Native American tribes by the U.S. military. Each year, a Nez Perce Reconciliation and Dedication Ceremony is held at Fort Vancouver. Chief Red Heart's band of the Nez Perce were held captive at Fort Vancouver in 1877 because they would not move to a reservation.
