Top 10 Walks of 2004

The clubs of the American Volkssport Association host over 1400 self-guided trails in the USA. The walks go through a wide variety of areas, from National Parks to countryside to quaint towns to neighborhoods and cities. We polled walkers for their favorites from 2004.

1. Charleston, South Carolina

The charming courtyard gardens of this gracious city, voted "Most Polite City in the USA" for years, earned this walk the most votes. It has been a top 10 walk for several years. Sanction YR1358.

2. St. Augustine, Florida

Voters said it was an all-time favorite, a beautiful walk full of history, lovely old homes, the water front, an old mission, and the Fountain of Youth. It is humid, so take it slow and enjoy. Sanction YR1128.

3. Point Lobos State Reserve - Carmel, California

The stunning Central California coastline is very photogenic as you walk through pine and cypress coves along the rocky coastline. Heed the warning signs in the park - all of the bushes you see are poison oak. Do not touch any foliage. A great walk memorable for the views, sea lions and birds. Sanction YR445.

4. Boston Freedom Trail, MA

Packed with historic and interesting sites, it is a very stimulating walk. Sanction YR0730.

5. Washington DC Monuments Walk

Walk through the monuments - Lincoln Memorial. Washington Monument, Roosevelt Memorial, Capitol, White House, and Vietnam Memorial on an easy 11 kilometer (7 mile) trail. Add in an optional loop of another 6 kilometers to see the Supreme Court, Union Station, and the National Archives. Sanction YR0231.

6. Santa Fe, New Mexico

View the old town as well as the new adobe buildings downtown. Voters enjoyed art center and the old plaza, with Native American wares being sold. Passes the oldest church in the US and the oldest government building in the US. Sanction YR0155.

7. Salt Lake City, Utah

Voters loved the Temple Gardens, the view of the mountains, bike path, city parks,lovely homes, and the downtown areas. The walk is likely 8 miles long rather than the stated 6.2. Sanction YR0075.

8. Coronado, California

It goes through a beautiful Village, the Hotel del Coronado, a Pacific Ocean top 10 beach, over to the bay by San Diego where there is an optional ferry ride to San Diego, past the senic bay and golf course, past some beautiful ocean front homes, and under the North Island flight path. Sanction YR0352.

9. Astoria, Oregon

Fans of the Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery and the film "Goonies" make a pilgrimage to this quaint coastal town, where Lewis and Clark finally reached the Pacific Ocean. A nice waterfront walk by boats, restaurants, historical buildings and homes and an optional climb up to the Astoria Column. Sanction YR0475.

10. Annapolis, Maryland Walk

An easy walk which includes the Capitol building, Governor's house, historic downtown Annapolis with its dock area and the US Naval Academy. You see many major attractions on this early American city trail. Sanction YR02641.
