This 13 kilometer (8 mile) stroll takes you to an island solely for walkers and bikers, where no motorized vehicles are allowed. The wealthy have summer "cottages" and yachts in the picturesque harbor.
The Grand Hotel has the longest porch in the world, with a grand view of the water and Mackinac Bridge.
Mackinac Island is located where the Lake Huron and Lake Michigan come together, crossed by the five-mile long Mackinac Bridge. A yearly walk crosses the bridge, with thousands of participants. There are several very scenic and historic walks in the area hosted by the local volkssport clubs. A great destination to come for a walking weekend.
The walk starts at the Tee Pee Campground, 11262 W US-23, Mackinaw City, on the lower peninsula, (231) 436-5391. The walk operates from Memorial Day Weekend at the end of May through September 30 each year. You reach the island via ferry boats that run every 20 minutes for a 10-15 minute ride to the island.
