Barefoot Running (and Walking)
Some runners are turning to barefoot running. Werd noted that research shows a different landing pattern for barefoot runners -- more on the midfoot and forefoot. But there isn't research to show that this might avoid injuries. Research on walking barefoot found that going barefoot decreased the stress on knee and hip joints for patients with osteoarthritis. And a study of old skeletons found fewer metatarsal foot problems.

Pros and Cons of Barefoot Running
Minimalist Athletic Shoes
Every shoe manufacturer has a minimalist shoe out for 2011. For those afraid to go barefoot, these shoes mimic the experience. The light weight can help with speed, but the lack of support and motion control mean that they are not for everyone. "Research has not yet proven which type of footwear or running gait is best at preventing injuries, so I discourage a rapid transition to minimalist footwear," Werd says in a press release.

Toning Shoes
The hottest shoe category of 2009-10 continues to be hot in 2011. Various unstable or rocker-soled shoes claim to activate more leg muscles and therefore burn more calories. Reviews from our readers show a range of responses, from those who love them to those who blame them for injuries and pain. Werd notes that the shoes' instability may be harmful to people with neuropathy, who have reduced feeling in their feet. As with minimalist shoes, it's best to build up walking and running time slowly in toning shoes to prevent problems.

Compression Socks
Tight-fitting compression socks aren't just for Grandpa anymore; they are featured in every running shoe store and marathon expo. Compression socks help the body return blood uphill to the heart rather than having it pool in the calves. Runners and walkers of all ages are turning to compression socks to improve circulation and stamina.
