For trail walking, this shoe provides stability and protection against rocks and roots with an all-terrain tread and durable outsole. It is built to last. For stability, it uses a stability web and transitional support system. Yet the sole is flexible in the forefoot so you aren't fighting a clunky shoe with each step. The big toe box is great for walkers who need more toe room or who have a bunion. I normally wear wide, but could wear the standard width with this model.
- Lightweight trail running shoe
- Flexible and breathable
- Comes in 3 widths: Narrow, normal, wide (AA-B-D)
- Durable outsole
- Big toe box
- Gusseted tongue supposed to keep out debris, but didn't
- Lightweight hiking shoe
- Rugged sole with protective plate.
- Supportive and cushions against rocks and roots.
- Stability shoe built on the SL-2 last.
Upper
The upper includes breathable Air Mesh. The upper is lighter weight. The tongue is gusseted to keep out rocks and to provide a bit of waterproofing. However, my only complaint is that I did pick up trail debris under the tongue.
Fit
Walkers with wide feet love the New Balance 907, with its generous toe box even in the regular width. New Balance produces the 907 in narrow AA, normal B, and wide D to fit a variety of feet. I had no difficulty in arranging the sausage-style laces to provide less restriction in the forefoot and get a good retention for the heel.
Trail and Town
The 907 is probably not your first choice for very rugged trails. It does a great job on gravel and natural trails, with the plate in the forefoot protecting your foot. But it also works very well in town - good looking, comfortable, and not a monster shoe. It truly is light weight. I got immediate compliments wearing this shoe to the office. The women's comes in sedate gray and blue. The men's version has hot orange.
