The Bottom Line

The NL-1000 activity monitor pedometer is a great pedometer for those who want to count steps, estimate walking distance, and record moderate-to-vigorous activity minutes. The automatic seven day memory helps you track your walking. The pedometer mechanism, a medical-grade accelerometer, is more tolerant of where it is worn, so will work better for more body shapes. It has no moving parts, so no annoying clicking. Updated 2/5/06.
Pros
  • Counts steps and calculates distance

Guide Review - New Lifestyles NL-1000 Activity Monitor Pedometer

This pedometer is a little more expensive than most, but it makes up for it in accuracy and reliability. The same medical-grade accelerometer mechanism is used that is top-rated in New Lifestyles NL-2000 for accuracy. This mechanism is more tolerant of being worn at an angle, so people with various body shapes may get better readings with these pedometers than they do with other pedometers.

Steps and Distance

The pedometer records steps constantly using its medical-grade accelerometer mechanism, which is silent. You will need to measure your stride length to set it to estimate distance accurately. Keep mind that distance is only an estimate, and you can adjust it as needed.

Activity Minutes

Adults should get 30-60 minutes a day of moderate to vigorous activity, and the NL-1000 records those minutes you spend logging steps fast enough to count as moderate to vigorous. You can set this lower or higher if you wish.

7-Day Memory

The automatic seven-day memory is a wonderful feature - you don't have to reset it each day, it resets to zero at midnight. If you forget to chart your steps for a day or two, they are still there in the memory.

Clip and Leash

The clip is often the weakest part of the pedometer, so New Lifestyles has gone to using a replaceable metal clip. I found that it held securely to my waistbands and didn't pop off, and I like having the extra security leash.
