What are you walking for? Jennifer Machajewski has a walking goal for 2005 - she will walk an average of 8 miles a day and raise $100,000 for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF). That is the cost of one research grant, which she hopes will eventually benefit her father who has multiple myeloma.

The distance over the year, 2800 miles, is approximately the same distance as walking across the width of the United States. Supporters can pledge or donate money for her effort This project is endorsed by the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation.

Walking for Charities

Walking for charity takes many forms.
  • Local Charity Walks: This is the most traditional event, introduced by the March of Dimes WalkAmerica. Check your local event calendars in the newspaper or the Active.com event calendar for upcoming events in your area.
  • Marathons and Half-Marathon Charity Programs: The Leukemia Society Team in Training was the pioneer in this area. Walkers and runners sign up to fundraise for the charity and in return they attend a great marathon or half-marathon event. Charity Marathon Programs
  • Virtual Charity Walk - Idita-Walk: Rather than bring all of the walkers together for an event, the Idita-Walk enlists walkers across the nation to do good for their health by walking 30 minutes each day, logging the minutes to the equivalent of the Iditarod Dog Race. This charity walk benefits a Nome Boy Scout troop. Idita-Walk
