The Nike+iPod Sports Kit contains a shoe sensor meant to go into the special pocket underneath the sockliner of Nike+ ready shoes. It also has a receiver that plugs into an iPod nano. The receiver is not compatible with any other iPod, you must use an iPod nano. But the shoe sensor can be used in unauthorized ways with other shoes.
