Sunday Parkways was an event to highlight Portland, Oregon, as a walkable and bikeable city. This June 2008 event was the first U.S. version of this event, previously held in Bogota, Colombia, Guadalajara, Mexico and in Australia. A 6-mile route was closed to vehicle traffic. At four parks along the way, displays promoted walking and biking, including free bike repairs, free snacks and restrooms. The event was well-attended by bikers and walkers of all ages.

After the success in 2008, Sunday Parkways events were held throughout the summer in different neighborhoods of Portland. Each event features booths, music and activities in parks along the route. This celebration of biking and walking helps keep Portland on the map as a walkable and bike-friendly city.

The first 2008 route featured north Portland, an older neighborhood undergoing revitalization with the introduction of MAX light rail line. I joined in with two of my walking buddies, where we declared it as one of the most pleasant walks we had taken recently. I was especially interested to see all of the front yard vegetable gardens taking hold in this older neighborhood.
