MapMyFitness has apps for walkers, runners, hikers and more. Many of them have a free version. All of them allow you to map and measure your route, see your speed and calories burned, and save and share your routes. By paying the $1.99 for the "+" version, you can geotag photos to add to your routes. You can also integrate a heart-rate monitor with an ANT+ dongle. It comes in iPhone, Blackberry and Android versions.

A great feature of this app is that you can download and store maps for offline use - critical if you are going walking or hiking in an area that lacks cell phone service or WiFi. You have nine different kinds of maps to choose from - topographic, road maps, satellite view, Google and Bing maps, and NOAA experimental marine charts. View your position and live-tracking on any of them. See your time, speed, position, altitude, ascent/descent and gradient data. You can add geotagged photos during your activities and share to Facebook or Twitter. You can save up to 400 personal waypoints. Want to know more about where you are? It has Wikipedia integration so you can "be your own tour guide." It comes in iPhone and iPad versions.

This iPhone app uses GPS to measure the distance of your walks and hikes. It includes a voice so you can hear replies from Facebook and Twitter to your workout posts while you walk, which can be very motivating. It maps your walk and you can view time, speed, distance and pace as you walk.

Noom is a weight-loss coach app, great for walkers who have a weight-loss focus. You can track your walks, seeing your speed, distance, calories burned, route and graphs of your workouts. You can log your meals, set your goals and get suggestions for staying on track. It is an Android app.
