About National Walk@Lunch Day:
National Walk@Lunch Day is held in April to encourage workers to walk for health and fitness during the work day. National Walk@Lunch Day is an extension of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association's WalkingWorks® program. The date for 2012 is April 25. Walk@Lunch Day
How to Participate:
Local walking events and fitness fairs may be held by Blue Cross and Blue Shield companies on National Walk@Lunch Day.
The Goal - Add Healthy Steps to Your Day:
Walking for 30 minutes a day as part of your work commute or lunch puts you into the "Moderate Physical Activity" category. USDA Guidelines 2010 say that brisk walking for at least 10 minutes at a time and a total of 30 minutes per day or 2.5 hours per week reduces health risks. Taking a walk during lunch can be a healthy part of getting the recommended amount of moderate-intensity exercise each day.
How to Walk:
If you are a stranger to walking, learn how to take your first steps with How to Walk for the Absolute Beginner. Learn how to start walking, from zero to walking comfortably for 30 minutes at a time.
Dressing for Walking:
Start with comfortable yet supportive shoes for walking for 15 to 30 minutes at a time. In case of April showers, plan an indoors walking route or bring along an umbrella or water-resistant jacket.
