The Bottom Line

This is my longtime favorite winter walking hat. It is perfect for temperatures from 30F-60F. It covers your ears, keeps the sun out of your eyes, yet doesn't overheat your head as fleece hats can. It is almost impossible to have it blow off in the wind. It has a ponytail hole for us longhairs. It folds up easily to stash in your pocket or pack. The DRYLYTE fabric is soft and wicks away moisture and is fast-drying.

Pros

  • Double thickness DRYLYTE soft wicking fabric
  • Covers your ears
  • Soft bill keeps the sun out of your eyes
  • Won't blow off in the wind

Guide Review - Sub4 DRYLYTE Extreme Cold Hat

I was in a mild panic when I couldn't find either of my two Sub4 DRYLYTE Extreme Cold hats to take with me to the Las Vegas Half Marathon in December. These have been my favorite winter walking hat since the turn of the century. Even worse, I had bought them at the Portland Marathon Expo around about 1999 and the manufacturer, Sub4, hadn't been back in several years.

So, when I spied the Sub4 booth at the Las Vegas Marathon Expo, I knocked over several scrawny runners in my dash to see if they had my favorite hat for sale. Yes! Score! I bought two for good measure and was thrilled to see that they now have a web site with online sales.

The Las Vegas Half Marathon was a good test for the Extreme Cold Hat. The early morning temperature was in the mid 40's F, with a stiff wind that made it feel colder. My Sub4 hat never budged from my head in the gusty wind. It fits closely but never feels tight. My ears are notorious for feeling frozen at 60F, but they never feel cold in this Sub4 hat.

As the sun came out and both the temperature and my heart rate climbed, the DRYLYTE fabric wicked away sweat to keep my head both warm and dry without overheating. I love having a bill to shade my eyes and complexion, that distinguishes the Extreme Cold Hat from simple caps.

The DRYLYTE fabric is very soft, and the cap stuffs easily into your purse, pocket, or pack. It is machine washable and dryable. I'm sure I'll find my other two missing hats from the 90's - they are still in great condition after countless washings. But now I am reassured of having a source to replace them should they ever stray too far away to be found.

Sub4 is "for runners, by runners," and makes its clothing and gear in the USA. We walkers love it, too.
