Cold Weather Walking Safety Tips and Alternatives

1. Start your walk INTO the wind: You'll be better able to judge just how cold it is and whether you have dressed appropriately.

2. Drink plenty of fluids: You may not be sweating, but breathing in cold air also depletes liquids.

3. Protect your eyes and skin: In winter the earth is closer to the sun than in summer and you don't have heat to remind you that the sun's radiation as well as the wind can damage your skin and eyes. Wear sunscreen and sunglasses that screen out the UV rays. Sunlight reflecting off snow can do a lot of damage to your eyes if not screened.

Alternatives to Winter Walking Outdoors

Reader suggestions: "Cross country skiing is quite often my alternative means of exercise when walking conditions deteriorate." Ann.

"Weeknights, I get home after dark, so walking outdoors just isn't practical. I tend to get in my exercise on a treadmill or lifecycle at the gym before work when I get the motivation. It's hard, since I am usually semicomatose, it's boring, but at least I have the news to watch..." Ann.
