Most walking moms find that it is difficult to get teens to join with them in walking. Teens pull their separate ways, and soon it is off to dating, college and/or career.

  • Solo Walking: Many women enjoy walking alone, spending time away from the family to clear the mind, de-stress, and get a good solo workout. Enjoying Walking Alone
  • Make New Walking Friends: For others who were used to walking with the children, now is the time to walk with husband or friends. Make new walking friends by joining a walking club or group. How to Find Walking Companions
  • Plan a Family Walk: Plan special walking days as family get-togethers. The picnic can be enhanced with a hike, a day at the beach with a long stroll.
  • Go for a Challenge: Teens and young adults may want more vigorous and challenging activities. Instead of an easy walk, plan to climb the trail to the top of a local mountain, enter a large walk/run event and let them run while you walk, joining together for the victory party.
  • Relay Walks: Enter a relay race as a family, such as the Portland-to-Coast Walk or the American Heart Association Relay for Life. Relay Walks
  • Holiday Walking: For holidays, plan a walk to carol, wear off the turkey, and spend some great time talking with your teens or grown children as you walk.
  • Marathon Woman: Set a great example for your grown children - train for and enter a marathon. Training for a Marathon or Half-Marathon Walk
  • Set Your Walking Schedule: Use your extra time as your children leave home to really get into a regular walking workout schedule. Get a heart rate monitor and follow a training schedule to walk faster, burn more calories, build healthy bone and muscle to stay fit for life. Weekly Walking Workouts
