2000 New Jersey Shore Marathon
26.2 MILE MARATHON WALK
Sunday, April 30th, 2000
About 100 of us hardy souls gathering around the starting line. Time was 1 hour and 30 minutes before the heroes of the day the Marathon Runners were to start their race. Sun was shinning. What a day to walk a marathon. Time clocks at each stop...walkers had to adjust to the l hour and 30 minute early start. I used my watch and when the gun when off so did my runner's watch. Water-Gatorade every mile. Rest rooms at the walkers beckon call. Police, fire, soldiers, volunteers and young boys and girls were out on the full 26.2 course to the very end. This Marathon is Walker Friendly +. At the finish line received beautiful Jersey Shore Marathon Medal. After race...changing tents...food supplies and a welcome bus back to the hotel where we were staying.
Just did the Virginia Beach Marathon on March 18th in 6:23 so I thought I might top that. Hubby and I had bet. He thought he could run it in 4:15..bet me dinner of winner choice if I could come in at 6:15.
Did I win the bet..oh no-o- 6:31:15. Yes I did treat him to a steak dinner at the shore overlooking the beautiful ocean we just ran by that after noon.
My excuse...I promised myself if I reach the 14th mile walk I would climb a high wooden stair case and walk along the sea wall in Sea Bright. The view was spectacular. I also at mile 7 had a short dance with one of our Rockland Road Runner Club members who came to cheer us on the take pictures and play music. I really have no excuse...had a great day...went out the next day and walked 5 miles. How many runners can do that after a marathon.
Would recommend this flat, beautiful, little windy course with a backdrop of the ocean...just beautiful. For those who are not into marathon walks...there is also a 15K=9 miles Fitness Walk along the ocean.
