Welcome to winter, and I wish you a merry
and healthy holiday season. The days will begin to get longer. Meanwhile, you can enjoy
the holiday sights and sounds best on foot.
Kevin Shaw, our Walking Walrus correspondant, has a couple of
holiday walk reports. This week he
walked from Union Station past the monuments and sights of Washington DC. He also tells
all about walking in Chocolate Town, USA - Hershey
Pennsylvania. Just in time for Christmas I added pictures by Kevin and links to the
Hershey site.
I had a merry holiday walk in downtown Portland, Oregon for the
yearly Christmas Ships walk. The
Columbia River Volkssport Club hosted the walk from the Bridgeport Brewpub in northwest
Portland. We walked down to the river and along the Riverfront Trail, watching as the
private boats sailed up the Willamette River to congregate, put on their lights, and sail
back down. The walk turned around at Riverplace Marina, lined with gift-laden shops and
tempting restaurants and more brewpubs. Then past Salmon Street Springs lighted fountain,
and up into town to see the city's Christmas Tree in Pioneer Square. The display windows
at Meier and Frank had animated puppets enacting the Twelve Days of Christmas. Back down
to the river, past Pioneer Place mall, and back to the brewpub. I wished Merry Christmas
to many walking friends along the way as the club hosted over 300 walkers.
We had a slew of holiday walk reports on Walklist.
Happy Holidays
To All!
