Can it:  I know a group of walking friends who collect cans for return deposit or recycling as they walk.  At first they designated the money to splurge on wine while on a walking tour to Spain.  Since then they have designated various charities to which they give their walking income.

Profit from Tobacco:  I know a couple of other walkers who look for discarded cigarette packs to collect the coupons from inside to redeem for prizes.

Pennies from Heaven:  Plenty of walkers are always finding spare change on the sidewalk.  Ken Wilson, national treasurer for the walking organization AVA, was well known for his joy of finding change on the trail.  One morning at a walking convention we went out and strewed 1500 pennies along the trail to his delight and amazement.

Chin up, Eyes Forward:  Finding too much change as you walk is a sign that you have poor walking posture and aren't keeping your chin up and eyes focused 20 feet ahead.  Not only will you walk smoother, you will look thinner.

Pledge Walking:  Even the frugal can know the joy of giving.  Participating in a charity walk where you collect pledges is a way to turn your walking into good deeds for others who may not be able to walk.  People are happy to give a bit for the cause.  Plus, you can get a free trip to Dublin, Disneyworld, San Diego or other great places through charity marathon programs.
