Wendy's Ramblings
Dateline: 08/17/97
Your Guide has been a busy walker and webmaster. On Saturday I won first
place for walkers in the Paralyzed Veterans of America Walk-Run-Roll at the VA Medical
Center in Vancouver, Washington. The field was small, but the door prizes were great. We
had several wheelchair participants (the rollers), a gaggle of runners, and we courageous
walkers. The event was designed to bring VA employees and veterans together in a fun
atmosphere. A great time was had by all and we are planning for a bigger crowd next year.
The Tough Trail Trompers hosted their Mt. Hood Tamanawas Falls walk last weekend
and drew 171 happy hikers. It was a great, sunny weekend and our club members enjoyed
staying at the Cooper Spur Inn while hosting the event. Tamanawas Falls is one of those
great places you can't drive to - you must walk in two miles to see the 100-foot falls.
The trail is rated easy, but the 3500 foot altitude makes it a little more difficult for
lowlanders.
The folks on Walklist have been
talking about ticks all week, so I searched the web and found the links to take you to
tick info. I believe I had a little friend visiting me on my trip to Tamanawas Falls,
despite my Avon sunscreen/insect repellent.
Saturday evening I went to our team meeting in preparation for the Portland-to-Coast Relay which I will participate in
next week. Our team is the Hip-Hippity-Hoppers and we should come in the fourth quarter of
our category - we are fun walkers, not competitors. But, by golly, we have a team song and
team t-shirts and will be partying on the beach with the likes of Nike's elite Mambu Baddu
just like racers. My article next week will be delayed until Tuesday to allow me to tell
you all about it with pictures.
