SportBrain owners were in mourning as the company closed its web site and went into receivership at the end of July, 2001.

SportBrain resumed operations at the end of 2002, to the cheers of its enthusiasts.

The SportBrain is an activity monitor - step counter - heart rate monitor. Wear the SportBrain and then upload the data each day to the web site. Your activity was then tracked online.

The fatal flaw is that the SportBrain is useless without the web site - users cannot view their data unless they upload it. In 2001, SportBrain sold its units for $100 but charged no ongoing fee for using the web site. As of 12/2002 the SportBrain web site is almost ready to start selling SportBrain units, and new usage fees have been instituted.

Keep Fit and It's Free
Previously registered SportBrain users pay no web site usage charges through March 16, 2003. For new users, there is a connection fee of $19.95 to use the service. Then users must upload every day, a total of 10,000 steps a day, in order to use the service for free. If they don't meet that goal or fail to upload on any day of the month they will be charged $9 for the month.

What can you do with your SportBrain without the web site? Rumor has it that the chest strap transmitter is compatible with some other heart rate monitors. You may be able then to order just a wrist monitor at a lower price, using your SportBrain chest strap transmitter. Take it to your local sports shop and test it with Polar models.

Other options:

Pedometers and a Log
Instant feedback, no worries about a web site going dead, and relatively inexpensive. Use a pedometer as a step counter and log your results each day. Cost is from $15-35 for a pedometer. ColoradoOnTheMove.org and WalkersWarehouse.com sell pedometers and have a free-to-use web site to log your walks.
