AVA Walking Convention 2001
Snoqualmie Walk - Twin Peaks - June 29

Dawn, Friday.  The walk today started as early as 6 am to allow us to get back to the convention for workshops and meetings and the banquet.  It was a gorgeous day - still cool but the sun was shining.  But as I drove into Snoqualmie I descended into the mists - appropriate for the setting of the cult TV show "Twin Peaks."

Twin Peaks
Salish Lodge

Our walk started at the Railroad Park.   We passed giant logs and aging trains which celebrated the history of the area.   Tall trees and logging still abound in this area, we were passed by several loaded log trucks, each carrying the remains of one tree.  We grow them tall here!

The trail passed by Salish Lodge, a luxury hotel whose exterior was The Great Northern Hotel in the series Twin Peaks.  I highly recommend it - lovely rooms (not the ones shown in the series) and fantastic food.

Snoqualmie FallsNow we descended down the trail to the viewpoint of Snoqualmie Falls - also familiar to Twin Peaks fans.  Down, down, down, down, down - watching the red faces of those who had been down and were coming up, gasping and panting for breath.  A half mile down!   Reaching the river (where Laura Palmer's body washed up wrapped in plastic in the series premier), we proceeded a short distance to the viewpoint.

Up the hillNow to go UPPPPPPPPP.  I checked my Mio heart rate monitor every pitch.  I started around 117 bpm.  After the first pitch - 130.  Next - 140.  Next - 150.  Next - couldn't get a reading but I was gasping desperately for air, so around 160.   I should pull the car up down below and charge folks for a ride back to the top - I'd make a ton of money!  A half mile back up to the top, approximately a 400-500 foot elevation gain.

The hill warmed me up (to say the least) and after that my little feet just wouldn't stop.  I took off like a shot over the next couple of miles.  Great - I need some speed training.  I passed people as Mount Si emerged from the mists and the day was sparkling and sunny.

We passed through the town of Snoqualmie and had a checkpoint at the park. It was a great aerobic walk in a lovely place.
