Walk Our National Heritage

Dateline: 05/23/99

The American Volkssport Association has a program to encourage walkers to visit national heritage sites in the USA. AVA clubs offer thousands of 10K non-competitive group walking events as well as self-guided routes throughout the USA. This program will end Dec. 31, 2007.

Register for the National Heritage Program

The National Heritage Program rewards walkers who walk 10 AVA-sanctioned events in National Parks, National Historic Sites, National Battlefields, or National Cemeteries. The events may be weekend group walks or the self-guided "year-round" trails.

To participate, walkers buy the National Heritage Event Record Book. At each walk, they stamp the book with the AVA credit stamp or otherwise note the event in the book. When they have finished 10 events, they send in the record book to redeem it for a colorful patch.

The program aims to promote walks in national heritage sites and sets a goal that is achievable by most people without leaving their own region. A list of some of the qualified events is online, but walkers should also check the AVA walking calendar for their area as new events are constantly added that may qualify.
