Stomach Sucking
Q:  Am I supposed to suck in my stomach while I walk?  I tried that and it is hard to breathe.
Wendy:   Walking is supposed to be an aerobic activity - so if you stop breathing you are definitely doing something wrong.  Coaches say that you should have straight walking posture INCLUDING tucking in your tummy as well as tucking in your behind. You should not hold it in so tight that you restrict breathing. Make sure you are able to take full, complete breaths.
Doing abdominal exercises is part of a good walking program - they don't get strengthened when walking, but are needed for good posture.

How Are They Counting Calories?
Q:
I was wondering about how they count calories expended. Several websites and programs I have dealt with have different values and I want to know why they are not the same and I would like the formula for how they figure this? I am very confused and frustrated over this.  For an example I weigh 136 lbs. I walk for 45 mins at 3.5 miles the treadmill I have says I burn 400 or so calories and the program I have on my computer says 390 cals and the internet says 190 cals.
Wendy:  You and me, both!  Different methods are used and often no reference is given.  I have a selection of these on my Calorie Calculating page, so you can compare. A good calculator should have input for distance, weight, and time.  Of these the distance and weight are the two most important factors, with the time/speed being of less importance.  Wherever you got that 190 calories, ditch it - most charts would put your calorie expenditure at around 400.  Whatever - don't stock up on Snickers bars as a reward or you'll have to be walking hours a day to make up for it.
